The Tour of Doctor Syntax

COMBE, William. The Tour of Doctor Syntax. London: Nattali and Bond, 1855. 3 volumes, ninth edition. Illustrations by Thomas Rowlandson.

The three volumes of The Tours of Doctor Syntax are in near fine condition. Half calf bound with marbled boards and a gilt-decorated spine. Hardly any wear considering age. The endpapers are marbled, as are the page edges. Pages are also in near fine condition, with very light foxing on some prelim pages. The contents include 80 exquisite Thomas Rowlandson colour plates.

William Combe’s The Tour of Doctor Syntax in search of the picturesque was begun in 1809 and published in book form in 1812. The epic poem tells how Doctor Syntax, a curate, sets off in search of the ideal picturesque landscape only to find himself continually thwarted. It was a satire that made light of William Gilpin, a British explorer who toured Britain to describe the picturesque landscape. It is known that Jane Austen owned a copy of the 1812 edition of the poem.
