The Tour of Doctor Syntax Synopsis
William Combe’s The Tour of Doctor Syntax in search of the picturesque was begun in 1809 and published in book form in 1812. The epic poem tells how Dr Syntax, a curate, sets off in search of the ideal picturesque landscape only to find himself continually thwarted. It was a satire that made light of William Gilpin, a British explorer who toured Britain to describe the picturesque landscape. It is known that Jane Austen owned a copy of the 1812 edition of the poem.
